The Boat Ride

“Look out the window, Daddy,”
my boys screamed to me,
so I leaned out and watched the rolling water crash – gently come to be.

And somewhere in that moment,
though I couldn’t tell you when.
I wasn’t bauld and bulging—
But a little boy again.

The water caught the sunlight,
the world fell soft and still.
Nostalgia hit back quietly,
as childhood sometimes will.

For half a second or maybe less
An old world – I saw anew.
And strangely, all the years between
just disappeared in the view.

My boys they laughed behind me,
the boat went drifting on.
I looked back at my own life,
and realised how far I’d come.

There are moments God gives us,
that heaven seems to send.
Never lasting long enough,
but long enough to mend.

And for that tiny moment,
with the water shining bright,
We were all just little boys
just looking at the waters might.
